Goal & benefit
Recognise complementary strengths, use new perspectives and agree on concrete complementary pairs. Different strengths. Bigger impact.
Ideal for
Teams that want to make better decisions and use diversity deliberately – ideally in person in a room.
Flow
- 1
Opening & warm-up
15 minExperience diversity as a strength. Short reflection: where do we see similar patterns in the team – and where do we deliberately lack another perspective? Explain the goal: not to judge, but to experience how opposites make us stronger. Result: openness and curiosity for other perspectives.
- 2
Constellation – where do you stand?
25 minExperience different poles in the room. The room is marked with an imaginary line between two poles (e.g. starting – analysing). Everyone spontaneously positions themselves on the line according to their own tendency, followed by a short exchange in small groups. Repeat with 3–4 more pairs of poles. Result: different tendencies become visible and appreciated.
- 3
Discover complementary pairs
30 minFrom opposite to complement. In groups of 2 or 3: who can complement me? Which perspective do I often lack? Exchange: what can we learn from each other? Where do we complement each other ideally? Define 3–5 concrete complementary pairs for the team. Result: concrete complementary pairs with clear added value for teamwork.
- 4
Transfer & commit
20 minOur next steps. Each pair defines a concrete field of application in everyday work (e.g. projects, decisions, customer work). Short presentation in plenary. Optional: visualisation on a team canvas. Result: binding agreements and first steps for implementation.
Materials & preparation
- Facilitation slide (poles as a line)
- Post-its & pens
- Strength cards (e.g. own or generic cards)
- Room marking (e.g. tape)
- “Complementary pairs” worksheets
- Team canvas (optionally digital)
Facilitation questions
- 1Find the tension: where do we not need more of the same?
- 2Meet your opposite: what can the other person do that suits me less?
- 3Build the complement: how do we use this concretely in everyday work?
Facilitator tips
- Adapt the poles to the team.
- There are no right or wrong positions.
- Facilitate as equals and with curiosity.
- Optional: document the constellations with photos.
- Example poles: starting – analysing, big picture – clarifying details, people – data, pace – care, creative – structured, taking risks – playing safe, spontaneous – planning, changing – stabilising, open discussion – clear decisions, new paths – proven ways.
- Example: idea collector (“I see many possibilities and bring new ideas into play.”) + implementer (“I bring structure, make decisions and keep the focus.”) = “We develop bold ideas and put them into practice together.”
Outcomes for your team
- 3–5 concrete complementary pairs with clear added value for teamwork.
- Binding agreements and first steps for implementation.
